Leonel Rozo
Leonel is a PhD student at the Institute of Robotics and Industrial Informatics IRI (CSIC-UPC) in Barcelona, Spain. His
research is focused on Robot Coaching of Manipulation Tasks using Haptics and Vision, which covers machine learning techniques, physical human-robot interaction issues as well as learning
by imitation approaches. Currently, he is a visiting researcher at the Learning and Interaction Group (under the supervision of
Sylvain Calinon), which is part of the
Department of Advanced Robotics, at the
Italian Institute of Technology (IIT), Genova, Italy.

Areas of expertise
- Robot learning from demonstration
- Physical human-robot interaction
- Machine learning
- Artificial intelligence
- Haptics
- Teleoperation
Research on robot coaching tackles robot programming by demonstration approaches with active learning (in this case, exploiting force-based perceptions). Such research implies to have a proof
knowledge on main areas in computer science, like: Machine Learning, Programming by Demonstration and Human-Robot Interaction. On the other hand, the research has studied some other robotic science
branches as: Teleoperation Systems, Virtual Environments and Haptic Feedback, which has been useful for creating suitable experimental setups for applying and testing theory hypothesis.
Positions / Experience
April 2011-now
Visiting researcher at the Learning and Interaction Group (leaded by
Sylvain Calinon), belonging to the
Department of Advanced Robotics, at the
Italian Institute of Technology (IIT), Genoa, Italy.
February 2007-now
Research and development engineer at the Perception and Manipulation Group (leaded by Carme Torras)
belonging to the Institut de Robotica i Informatica Industrial IRI (CSIC-UPC), Barcelona, Spain.
